アメリカ・インディアンの伝承らしいが、ペットの飼主が愛する動物たちと別れても、天国のほんの少し手前にあるという虹の橋でまた再会して、一緒に虹の橋を渡り共に天国に行くのだそうだ。虹の橋は、天国とこの世のかけ橋。我々とペットはいつまでも結ばれている。
『虹の橋』
天国の、ほんの少し手前に虹の橋と呼ばれるところがある。この地上にいる誰かと愛し合っていた動物たちは、死ぬと虹の橋へ行く。そこには草地や丘があり、彼らはみんなで走り回って遊ぶのだ。たくさんの食べ物と水、そして日の光に恵まれ、彼らは温かく快適に過ごしている。
病気だった子も年老いた子も、みんな元気を取り戻し、傷ついていたり不自由な体になっていた子も、元の体を取り戻す。まるで過ぎた日の夢のように。
皆幸せで満ち足りているけれど、たった一つだけそうでないことがある。それは、残してきた、自分にとっての特別な誰かが、ここにいないという寂しさを感じていることだ。動物たちは、皆一緒に走り回って遊んでいる。でも、ある日その中の一匹が突然立ち止まり遠くを見つめる。その瞳はきらきら輝き、体は喜びに小刻みに震え始める。
突然その子は皆から離れ、緑の草の上を走り始める。それは早く早く、飛ぶように、あなたを見つけたのだ。あなたとあなたの友は、再会の喜びに固く抱き合い、もう二度と離れたりはしない。
幸福のキスがあなたの顔に降り注ぎ、あなたの両手は愛する動物を優しく愛撫する。そしてあなたは、信頼にあふれる友の瞳をもう一度覗きこむ。あなたの人生から長い間失われていたけれど、その心からは一日たりとも消えたことのなかったその瞳を。

“Rainbow Bridge”
Just this side of Heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by.
The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; his eager body begins to quiver.
Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again.
The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
